About us

Engineering confidence into every project

Frontier Fire is a South African fire engineering consultancy specialising in DTS fire plans, rational designs and special-risk fire protection solutions. Our multidisciplinary team of three directors — including a Professional Engineer, mechanical engineer and civil engineer — brings 13 years of combined experience to every project. We deliver practical, technically sound and project-specific fire engineering solutions with confidence from design through to implementation.

Why We Started Frontier Fire

Frontier Fire was established after identifying a recurring gap in the commercial and industrial property market: fire compliance is often considered only after a property has been purchased, leased or a development concept has been finalised.

Decisions made during property selection can have significant fire safety and cost implications. Building geometry, available fire water, existing fire protection systems, occupancy classification and intended storage arrangements can all affect whether a property is suitable for its proposed use. For example, the achievable storage height within a warehouse may be limited by the building configuration and the sprinkler protection required for the proposed commodity.

Frontier Fire provides prospective purchasers, tenants and developers with specialist fire engineering input before these decisions are made. Our pre-acquisition and development assessments identify potential compliance constraints, required upgrades and fire protection considerations early, allowing clients to understand the implications of a property before committing to it.

Our aim is simple: identify the fire engineering constraints early, when there is still an opportunity to make informed decisions rather than costly changes.

Proactive coordination

Authority requirements and potential queries are considered early, helping projects move toward approval with fewer unnecessary interruptions.

Why a Fire Engineer Is Required

A fire engineer is not appointed simply to satisfy an administrative requirement or to add unnecessary costs to a project. In most cases, the involvement of a fire engineer is required by the insurer to ensure that the proposed fire protection measures adequately protect people, property, business operations, and the insurer’s financial interests.

A fire engineer assesses the specific fire risks associated with a building or process and develops a comprehensive fire protection strategy that ensures compliance with applicable codes, standards, and insurance requirements. This process often prevents costly design errors, identifies potential risks before installation begins, and ensures that the installed fire protection systems will perform as intended in the event of a fire. In many cases, the cost of appointing a fire engineer is significantly lower than the potential financial consequences of an inadequate fire protection design, project delays, rejected submissions, increased insurance premiums, or losses resulting from a fire incident.

What registration is required by a fire engineer to indicate adequate occupancy

The person performing the fire engineering work must be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng), or a Professional Engineering Technologist (Pr. Tech Eng), with adequate experience in the fire engineering to demonstrate competence.

The local authority or insurer also requires the individual to qualify as an approved competent person (ECSA Registered) under the National Building Regulations.

In practice, many South African municipalities and insurers will only accept an occupancy determination when it is supported by a signed fire report and fire drawings prepared by a professionally registered engineer with demonstrable fire engineering competency.
